NHS (National Health Service) treatment (doctor, hospital, etc) is generally free.
However, there are charges for prescriptions, sight tests, glasses and dental treatment. If you are under 19, in receipt of certain qualifying benefits, are pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months, you will be exempt from some or all of these charges. If you are not in receipt of benefit and are on a low income, you can apply for help with these health costs through the NHS low income scheme.
Help is income-related: your income will be assessed and you may be entitled to full or limited help with costs. If you qualify you will be sent an HC2 Charges Certificate for full help (ie. free prescriptions, dental treatment etc) or an HC3 Charges Certificate for limited help (it will show how much help towards costs you can receive and how much you'll have to pay towards dental treatment etc).
To apply for help fill in an HC1 form, available from surgeries and the Student Advice Centre. You need to include details of the student funding you receive. It is better to claim before you need treatment so you know how much help you can get. If you need treatment before you have your certificate you will need to pay and then claim a refund on an HC5 form (available from surgeries). You will need to enclose a receipt and make a claim for your refund within 3 months.
NOTE: You need to register with a dentist who provides NHS treatment for the low-income scheme to apply. Also, you need to tell the dentist when you register and before you start any treatment that you want NHS treatment, otherwise you may be treated as a private patient. International students (and their spouses and dependents), who are on courses of six months or more are entitled, from the beginning of their stay, to receive treatment from the NHS.
International students can apply for help from the low income scheme (as this is not regarded as a recourse to public funds by the Home Office and so will not threaten immigration status).
