This page gives information about funding available for social work students at Sussex in 2009/10.
Please note: The rates for 2010/11 have not yet been released but will be published on these pages as soon as they become available.
If you are a home student who is undertaking a degree in Social Work at Sussex, you are eligible for help with your fees and living costs on the same basis as other full-time home undergraduates. This means that you may be eligible to apply to Student Finance England for a Fee Loan, Maintenance Loan, Maintenance Grant/ Special Support Grant and any of the supplementary grants for students in certain circumstances. Students from England may also be eligible for a non means-tested bursary of £4,575 in 2009/10 via the NHS Business Services Authority. This bursary contains a tuition fee contribution (although you do not have to use it towards your tuition fees if you don’t want to). It also includes a fixed contribution of £575 to help you meet your travel costs on placement.
If you are from Wales, the Care Council for Wales will pay a non-means tested bursary of up to £2,500, up to £1,285 towards your tuition fees, and a practice learning allowance of £500. Students from Northern Ireland however will not be eligible for a bursary or additional help towards tuition fees.
If you are a home student who is undertaking a part-time degree in Social Work (DipSW) at Sussex, you may be eligible for help with your fees and living costs from Student Finance England on the same basis as other part-time home undergraduates. Part-time social work undergraduates from England may also be eligible for a non means-tested bursary from the NHS Business Services Authority. The amount of bursary you are eligible to receive in 2009/10 will be the full-time rate (£4,575) multiplied by 3 and then divided by the number of years that your course lasts. This includes a contribution towards your tuition fees (although you do not have to use it towards your tuition fees if you don’t want to). Part-time students from Wales may be eligible for a bursary from the Care Council for Wales which will be calculated on a pro-rata basis.

If you are from England and you are undertaking a full-time postgraduate Diploma in Social Work (DipSW) at Sussex, you may be eligible for a non means-tested bursary of £3,362.50 in 2009/10 from the NHS Business Services Authority. This includes a fixed contribution of £862.50 towards your placement travel expenses. you may also be eligible for a non-means tested contribution towards your fees of up to £3,390 and depending on your income, a means-tested maintenance grant of up to £2,608 in 2009/10.
If you are from Wales and you are undertaking the full-time Diploma in Social Work at Sussex, you may be eligible for a non-means tested bursary of £2,500 in 2009/10, fee support of up to £3,390, and a £500 practice learning allowance from the Care Council for Wales. Depending on your income you may also qualify for an additional means-tested award of up to £2,570.
In addition, students from England or Wales with children or a disability may be eligible for any of the supplementary grants available to full-time home undergraduates. This means that you may be eligible to apply to your respective Socal Work funding body for an Adult Dependants’ Grant, the Parents’ Learning Allowance, the Childcare Grant or a Disabled Students’ Allowance.
