You will face a fine of up to £1,000 if you don’t get one. According to TV Licencing, enquiry officers and detector vans are going to be checking up on more student accommodation in more universities nationwide than ever before.
You can pick up an application form from the Student Advice Centre or any post office and can now pay online at www.tvlicensing.co.uk/students.
You may be enititled to a refund if you have a licence that you won't be using over the summer, for example if you are moving home or going travelling. Click here for details.
If you live in halls of residence and use a TV in your room, you need your own separate TV Licence.
If you live in the private sector and are sharing a house with other tenants/students under a joint tenancy agreement the household will only need one TV licence – even if you each have a TV in your own room.
If you have an individual tenancy agreement (for example you live in a bedsit flat and have a television in your room or you live in a shared house but you have individual agreement for your room) you will need your own TV licence. However, if you have a separate tenancy agreement, and no-one uses a television in their own bedroom – but a television is used in a communal area - then only one licence is required for the TV in the communal area.
From 1 April 2009 a colour TV licence will cost £142.50 and a black and white licence will cost £48.
