Welfare Benefits and part-time students

Students who are not on a full-time programme of study may be eligible to claim Income Support, Housing Benefit/Local Housing Allowance and Council Tax Benefit subject to satisfying the usual qualifying conditions for those benefits.  The level of benefit received will be dependent on a means-test (income-assessment).

Part-time students may also be eligible to claim Jobseekers Allowance subject to satisfying the usual qualifying conditions.  However, part-time students claiming Jobseekers Allowance should be aware that these conditions include that the claimant must be “available for” and “actively seeking” work.  If your hours of study clash with the times that you have agreed with the DWP that you are available for work, you will only be accepted as available for work if either:

  • you are able to rearrange your hours of study; or
  • you are willing and able to give up the course should a job become available.

Tax credits and part-time students

Part-time students may be eligible to claim Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit.  The eligibility criteria is no different for part-time students than for full-time students.  Please click here for further information on tax credits, or come and speak to one of our Advisers.
