► Big Band Society Information
The primary objective of the USBB (University of Sussex Big Band) is to create a Jazz ensemble that may provide entertainment to the University of Sussex and the wider public as a whole, and give talented musicians in the university and affiliated to the university the ability to develop and show off their skill to a wider audience.
The USBB is also intended to act as a source of musical expertise that can be used and called upon by other societies (e.g. drama society for musicals) though these will be granted at the discretion of the director whose primary objectives should be in the interest of the USBB itself.
To join the big band, when the hurdle of auditions has been accomplished, we ask for a £10 membership fee. This fee goes towards the purchase of new charts and music that we will then add to our growing repertoire. We play many gigs throughout the year and the money that these gigs create in fees and donations goes towards buying music and the rights to perform the charts, upkeep of the equipment required by the band, hire of additional equipment when required, transport and any other costs associated with running the band for the year. We also aim to make a donation towards the band tour during the summer as a ‘thank you’ to our members.
