Hello and Welcome to the University of Sussex Students' Union

"I am Laura Tazzioli, the president of the Students' Union. Myself and the other five sabbatical officers are here to help you have an exciting, fun and meaningful experience at University.

Whether you want to get involved in sports, societies and volunteering, voice your opinion in one of the many campaigns, or meet like-minded people and friends for life, the Union is here to support you.

For more information come and find myself or one of the other Union officers in Falmer House for a chat or any advice. Don’t forget to come and check us out on SabbShout, a weekly-updated blog written by the Union officers, so that you guys can keep up-to-date with what is going on in your Union, (blogs.ussu.info).
The only advice I would like to give you is: get involved and live the Sussex spirit. Make these the best three years of your life"

Laura Tazzioli USSU president 2008-09

The University of Sussex Students' Union has existed ever since there was first a University at Falmer in 1962.  Its existence is guaranteed in the Royal Charter that established the University.  And in all that time the defining feature of the Union is that it is democratically controlled by its members - you the undergraduate and postgraduate students of the University.

You make USSU what it is - by ...

  • attending General Meetings and USSU events
  • joining Union societies - or starting one of your own
  • playing for your Sussex sports team
  • going to a SUDS play
  • voting in USSU elections
  • volunteering in UNISEX or Project V
  • reading the Badger
  • visiting the Union bars
  • talking with the Advice Centre about a dodgy landlord
  • helping spread the Eco-Uni message
  • being a course rep or member of Students' Union Council
  • shopping in our three USSU shops
  • presenting a show on URF Radio
  • signing a petition about library facilities
  • saving up for a Ball ticket
  • hearing a visiting campaigning speaker
  • joining a RAG bungee jump for charity
  • helping another student learn your language
  • running your society's Web site

Who keeps it all going?

USSU employs between 20-30 full time staff, including the Union Director, Advice Centre Manager, Commercial Manager etc to provide professional support to the student body.  But all the important decisions are made by elected students on behalf of the student body at large.

The six sabbaticals are the most visible of the elected officers.  These officers have been elected for a one-year term during which they work full-time for the Union .  But many more students are involved at all levels.

There are over 50 student positions elected or appointed to Union Council, committees and other groups which work to decide the Union's direction and priorities.  Then a hundred or more others hold office as club captains, society treasurers, Badger editors, and many more.

Plus, at any one time, there are nearly 200 students employed by USSU to serve their fellow students in the bars and shops, working from 3 to 30 hours a week to fit in with their studies.
