The University of Sussex Students Union (USSU) is a democratic organisation, run by students for students with administrative support and advice from USSU staff. Whatever your age, background or circumstances USSU believes that your time at University should be one of the most enjoyable times of your life. To help make this happen USSU provides services (food, shops and entertainment), extra curricular activities (clubs, societies and volunteering opportunities) and support (professional advice and representation).
As a democratic member-led organisation the USSU is headed by a team of six full-time “sabbatical” officers, together with a number of “non-sabbatical” officers and reps. These student officers are elected directly by you, the students at large. This means that students have the opportunity to choose who they think is best to lead the USSU.
What is a sabbatical officer?
The name ‘sabbatical’ describes students taking a sabbatical year out from their studies (or after completing a course) to work in the Union. Sabbatical officers work full-time - and are paid - for the year. USSU has six full-time sabbatical officers, and each position has its own portfolio (see officer positions).
What is a non-sabbatical officer?
All the other students who help run USSU do so while they continue with their studies. Although, of course, they spend much less time on Union business, they are a vital part of all the Union's decision-making processes. USSU has a number of ways for students to get involved:
by being a non-sabbatical elected officer
by representing other students on the Union Council
by being a Representative Officer (for the Women's Group, for LGBT students, Postgraduates etc)
by taking a place on Activities Committee
by working in one of the Union Media.
As soon as you arrive at Sussex you are automatically a member of USSU * which means you can use all the services we provide (such as USSU Advice services, our shops bars and catering facilities) and get involved in the democratic and representative structures (as a voter and/or a candidate).
* all full-time students and students studying at least the 50% of a full-time course are full members of the Union. BSMS students are also full members.
Stand! – As we have said, any Sussex student can stand for an elected position. Many sabbatical officers were previously non-sabbatical elected officers or Council reps. You may want to help the Union do what it does even better, or perhaps you think certain things should change. It takes over 40 students to fill the places in USSU’s democracy - there must be a place for you! Read the post descriptions, and fill out a nomination form!
Vote! – Have your say the democratic way! Make sure that the right people are representing your views. Check out the manifestos of the candidates on this website, speak to the candidates during the campaign process, make sure you vote and get your friends to vote too.
Campaign! – A friend or fellow student is standing as a candidate this year and you feel allied with their policies – why not join in and give them a hand? Electioneering is hard work, but it’s good fun too…and you can get tips by looking at the NUS "stand toolkit".
