► Mountaineering Club Information

WELCOME TO THE USMC WEBSITE

The University of Sussex Mountaineering Club organises both hiking/hillwalking and rock climbing activities.

Every week we make 2 trips to local indoor climbing walls, we usually have a social meeting and sometimes a walk in the local area. We also have 2 or 3 weekend trips per term. These trips go to a variety of interesting areas around the country. Some likely destinations include: The Peak District, north WalesCornwall, The Lake District and Dorset. In most of these places there will be a choice of walking or climbing and the trips can be expected to cost around £30

We sometimes go for walks on the South Downs on Sundays for no extra cost. For this you will need suitable clothing and footwear, bearing in mind that it might rain/be muddy, and some food and drink (or money to buy it). As we don’t go every Sunday these will be announced by email during the week.

The first Monday indoor wall climbing session of the year will be a beginners session and there will be instructors available to teach you what to do. We accept beginners after this but you will be taught by experienced club members so we can’t take too many at once.

Training: ---------------------------------------------------------------------

We usually climb indoors at the Adur Outdoor Activities Centre in Shoreham and provide a minibus to get there.

Shoreham is a good climbing wall for a range of different abilities and experienced club members will be available to teach you anything you need to know, so no experience is necessary. It costs £4.80 to get in but if you like it and go regularly there are discounts available. We usually go for a drink afterwards (unless everyone votes against it - which almost never happens) and then take you back to campus. For those who don't live on campus we can normally drop people off in the Lewes road area if necessary, but if you live much further away you'll have to arrange your own way back or be nice to the driver. As we are only allocated one minibus for this, only the first minibus full of people to turn up will be able to go. Others who turn up will be given priority for the next week.

Monday evenings. We meet for this in the common room in Falmer house at 6pm – hopefully you’ll be able to spot us in our club t-shirts. All necessary equipment is provided by the club, but if you have your own please bring it.

Wednesday afternoons we meet in the common room at 2pm for another indoor wall climbing session, unfortunately we have no minibus for this so have to get there by public transport.

Equipment is supplyed by us, but if we dont have your size you can hire some from the climbing wall's gear cupboard. It is best to being some lose clothes that will help moving and reaching when climbing, though it wont matter too much if you forget, just dont attempt any crazy moves.

Socials: ---------------------------------------------------------------------

There are usually socials on Wednesday nights which we tell people about using our email list. These go to different pubs around town, but our favourite is our sponsor the Evening Star (near Brighton station). If you're new to Brighton this is a great way of getting to know the place
