Welcome to the Psychology Society minisite!
Whaddup y'all? Glad you could joined us!
So, Fresher's fair has come and gone; now the real fun can start!!
Just to let you quickly know, the upcoming events we have planned are
Short term:
- bowling!
- speed dating w/ psych twist! (more on this during our first meeting - details to be announced soon!!)
- film nights! - I still need to contact the union regarding hiring out the Cube for our proposed film'n'pizza nights (possibly in collaboration with the Film Appreication Society), but it should be fine. Films would probably be fortnightly.
- iminent pub-crawl! - we're thinking purple'n'green, sort of after the colours of the society, really :) More details to be announced soon!!
- east slope kissing booth! - simple; take a bunch of psychologists, chuck em in East Slope, give 'em a mic, some paper, and pens, and let things go from there. Basically you hand in a piece of paper to the MC, where you write a comment about someone - maybe an observation (us being psychologists, and all), something you like about them, or a funny story etc. etc., - the MC can then read it out (don't worry! if you're that shyish type you can make it anonymous if you like!). This idea is still a maybe-in-the-works, but it's a real possibility if you lot fancy it!
Med / long-term:
- want to do more with Psychology beyond the textbook and outside the lecture halls? Volunteer!! Do some research (and maybe take part in) the University's Project V link-up service - a collaborative project between us and them (as it were), where societies can volunteer in the local community.
Interest for this will be registered at the first meeting; after I have an idea of numbers, then I can atttempt to sort something out for us.
- visit Freud's house and beyond! That's right - one thing I definitely want to do during my time here leading you lot is whisking you all away as a society to Vienna for a long-weekend or something to visit the so-called sage of Vienna's house itself - Freud fancied himself more a short-story writer than a psychologist. Interesting eh?
This is still in it's very early stages of development, but interest again will be registered at the first meeting - if you want to help you're more than welcome to chuck yer ideas this way!
Apart from that, my shiny new freshers (and others), I have nothing else to say! Below I've provided some handy links though which I discovered a bit late during my first year, and found fantastically useful in doing my work. Make the most of the resources available to you!! These are listed below.
sussex direct - the one-stop-shop for everything admin re: you and uni; check your course results, fees due, timetable, etc. etc. etc. - bookmark this and use it lots!!
study direct - as above! A treasure-chest of information regarding your current modules - usually your lectures are listed here (in powerpoint slides as well as pdfs), and sometimes podcasts too; also is the forum for that module, where you can post any question you have regarding something you studied during the module, and have your response swiftly answered by one of the lecturers.
S3 - perfect for new undergraduates! Really helps you get to grips with 'being at university' and adjusting to the work difference - tips on how to plan, revise, research, write, etc. etc. It's all there!
InfoSuss - the uni library's 'information literacy tutorial' - helps guide you through the maze on electronic information / finding resources stuff!
University's Psychology page on the library - great for more of those resources you're gona need
metalib - service from the library offering to search accross databases for your subject for that all important paper - very handy indeed! Just log in with your uni account (username and password are usually the same as the ones on your uni email)
intute - most resources on the web (minus the ones here of course!) are always a bit dubious. This aint one of 'em
bored? had a heavy night and fancy a duvet day? check out these great links!!
surfthechannel - every show you could probably watch, for nothing! (search for it, click the 'Television' catagory after you search)
icefilms - probably all the films you could ever watch - for nothing!
Members will be kept in the loop by a regular fortnightly e-newsletter, along with occassional meetings needed to organise specific events.
